17TH-CENTURY ITALIAN-FLEMISH PAINTER (Active in Rome in the second half of the 17th century) David and Abigail Oil on canvas, 60 x 80cm Fair conditionWe present in this auction catalogue an interesting oil painting on canvas of good quality, depicting the biblical episode from the First Book of Samuel: the meeting between David and Abigail. The scene depicts Abigail offering gifts of food and wine to David and his army to appease his anger after her husband, Nabal, had refused to help them. On the left, David is depicted in armour with his dog, whilst Abigail is kneeling in the centre, mediating the situation with an eloquent gesture. The painting, attributed to a Flemish Baroque painter – likely Abraham Willlemsen or Willemsens (Antwerp, 1614–1672) based on the collection of provenance – may – with some caution – be attributed to a skilled painter of Northern European origin with a clear connection to the Roman school of the second half of the seventeenth century, whose style is recognisable in the works of the circle of Pietro da Cortona (Cortona, 1596 – Rome, 1669). Postage: Italy €120; EU €240
